The Municipal Building

Municipal Building 2010

In 1936, the Village of Haverstraw erected a new Municipal Building on industrial land on Maple Avenue to consolidate the village hall, police station, DPW, and quarters for the 3 Middle Street companies in to one modern governmental center.

Only 4 blocks from Middle Street, the Municipal Building included 3 independent Apparatus bays with meeting rooms and break rooms, and was centrally located 2 blocks from the Bank Corner. With the advent of radio communications, radio station 4-100 was located in #2′s quarters, and the Gamewell System also resides in the basement.

Space was always at a premium in the Municipal Building and often the Mayor would ask companies for space. Cosgriff gave their meeting room up to Village Hall, but at the same time took over the firing range in the basement. The new Rescue renovation, done after the PD vacated, incorporates the original DPW office as well as the old 551 pokey.

In the late 1970’s, the DPW was to move to a new building on Dr. Girling Drive. The Village Hall was to move to the Provident Bank building at the turn of the century and the Haverstraw Village Police Department would consolidate and vacate the building in 2006.

The Cosgriff Hose Ladies Auxiliary, the Chiefs, and the Companies got a little extra room after a  long cramped existence.  Today, after dedicating the Council Rooms to all of the Past Chiefs of the Haverstraw Fire Department, all department functions are held in the ‘Shrine’
